Meet our December Guest Designer! Tara Pollard Pakosta!

Hi Everyone!  I would like to introduce our newest guest designer for the month here at AMLT! Tara Pollard Pakosta!  First let's get to know her a little better here are some questions Tara answered for us:

1. How long have you been scrapbooking for?

I have been scrapbooking since I got a scrapbook for a high school graduation present in 1988, a LONG TIME AGO. But I really have gotten into even more since I had my first daughter almost 9 years ago.

2. Who is your favorite scrapbook manufacturer?

There are honestly so many Manufacturers out there that I love that I can't pick a favorite one! I love American Crafts, October AFternoon and Creative Cafe. I also love KI and Making Memories.

3. Do you listen to anything while you scrapbook or have a favorite scrapbooking snack? :)

I really can't listen to music and scrap at the same time cause I start paying more attention to the music and get off track! I love to have it peaceful and quiet! Or sometimes my girls, ages almost 9 and 7.5 scrapbook with me.

4. Describe your scrapbooking style in three words.

Simple, funky &  honest.

5. Name one thing that you can't scrap without (not including photographs and adhesive)?

That may change from time to time, but lately it's definately ribbon, staples and stamps!

I sent Tara some American Crafts goodies to work with she has 2 little girls, but proved the "teen" line from AC, works wonderfully for little girls and teens alike!  Here are the wonderful things she came up with:

[One minute Monday] - Creating custom embellishments

Accent1 Hi there! Kristina here and I've got a quick tip for you this Monday morning. Recently I was going through my scrapbook supply stash and came across some circle chipboard shapes by Scenic Route. I wasn't sure why I had kept them since I knew I didn't like the sayings and colors on the front, but after looking at them for a minute I realized that I COULD put them to good use by fixing them up a bit and creating my own embellishments. It's so easy! All I did was turn the chipboard pieces over, paint them with acrylic paint a pretty blue and then cut out a scalloped piece of cardstock using my scraps. Add a punched circle with more cardstock scraps and a threaded button and there you go! Custom made embellishments from scrapping supplies that I thought would never get any use! :) So the tip for today is always take a second look at your supplies and you might be able to alter them yourself and create a unique and creative embellishment! Be on the lookout for one of our February design team assignments to get some more great ideas on custom embellishments that you can do on a budget! Thanks for stopping by! Have a great day!:)

End of the Year Steals!

Hi there!

I'm not sure if there are any of you who are still checking the blog on Saturdays (I HOPE THERE ARE) for new steals of the week, but if there are I apologize for this post coming a bit late.

For the next couple of weeks I am going to change the way we do steals of the week due to the fact that it is the end of the year.  The end of the year brings lots of fun, as it is the time that we must COUNT our inventory, and if anyone could take a tour of the store they would realize that this is not something that can be done in a one day steals of the week update, in fact we will be lucky to make it through in one week.   It is a great time of year for my husband's "real job" to have a company wide shut-down week though as I have him here to help, and I have to admit I just like having him here so this is always my favorite week of the year.  We also have real need of clearing out stock for both room and cash flow for another CHA in less than 4 weeks (WOW can you believe so soon!), so if you like bargains, and down right unbelievable steals and deals this is your week!

So this is how it will work -- Yesterday we began moving, counting and discounting.  Some items were added to steals of the week, some were added to our clearance section, but we are not even close to being done. Most items added to Steals of the week were entire product lines or newer items, while items being moved to clearance are bits and pieces of older lines.  The items appearing in the steals of the week section will stay there not just until Saturday as they normally do, but will stay there at least until January 10th, and new items are going to be added nearly every day until then.   I will try to update this blog very regularly (and not tromp on my DT's scheduled posts) with which items were added, discounted and moved. This will give you have an idea as the program we use for adding items to the specials section dumps them in there is no real organized order which is bothersome to me.  The alternative is not even feasible as it would take years so we have to use it, as it still takes forever the faster way!

So you will want to check the store and blog daily as we will be updating all week.  Remember however, that many items on in these sections are one's and twos left in stock, they  WILL NOT be restocked and once they are gone they are gone.  If you really want something I would suggest checking out with it soon.. REMEMBER I do hold orders and I honestly do not mind if you end up with 10 orders to combine in 2 weeks time.  I have customers apologize for doing this, but PLEASE don't.  I want to help you get the most for your money, and if combining ten orders is the best way for you to do that and still get to your shipping discount I'll work with you.

So here are the updates that we made yesterday:

Steals of the Week Items:

Entire Stock of 3 Bugs in a Rug on Sale

Entire Stock of 7 Gypsies on BLOW OUT!

Entire Stock of Best Creation Transparencies, Specialty Papers and Chipboard Books

All Remaining Heather Bailey 30% off!

All Remaining Cute World on sale!

Items moved to Clearance: (please note the product type categories at the top, and the sub categories with %'s off)

Entire stock of A2Z Paper

Entire stock of clear stamps from Autumn Leaves and Rhonna

And last but never least, if you would like to enter this fabulous prize leave a comment and this time you can ask me a question (or any of the AMLT girls) if you wish. I'll pick a winner on Thursday (new years day).  Special thanks to my fabulous sales rep from 7 gypsies who helped me with a good portion of this prize!  Most of the time I provide prizes from my own store stock, so her help is greatly appreciated!  Check back often for more sale updates!

Calendar ideas…getting organized for the new year

I hope that you all have had a great Christmas! Now it's time to look forward again. New Year's Eve is getting closer and so are lots of new promises. I've decided to make a simple calendar to help me get organized when it comes to my scrapbooking. I hope you also can get a few ideas. All I've done is that I've picked old calendar papers from the 2007 "Designing with..." calendar and used with my own goals. One page per month, one goal... (I only show the three first pages since the blog would get crazy with all twelve.) Good luck to us all! / Monica

Christmas Eve Journaling Prompt

Hey guys, Courtney here bringing you a handy journaling prompt for the day.

Sometimes we think about what could have been, or what should have been, but lose sight of what was supposed to be. I think all of us have had those defining moments in our lives, where things weren't going the way we thought they should, but some how we got where we were meant to be. Maybe a relationship that ended, but opened up a new door, a job we wanted and didn't get, even the more simple things in life, I smiled at a stranger who later stopped to talk to me and we've become very close friends, if I had been closed off and upset like I had wanted to I would have missed out on that... The Holidays are always a time of reflection for me, so right now I'm giving thanks for every time I thought it coulda, woulda, shoulda happened, but somehow turned out how it was meant to be and that will venture onto a scrapbook page this week!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Hello Everyone, just wanted to take a minute to say:

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

from everyone here at the Hicken home, that's AMLT I suppose as all of our "staff" resides here :).  I have not sent out Christmas cards for years, I am sorry, so the blog wish will have to substitute.  If you don't celebrate Christmas then Happy Holidays to you!

I think I will survive, every year I make it a goal the first part of December that I will enjoy the season and not stress, but somehow that doesn't ever happen but I am getting better.  My future wish is to be able to look at Christmas as I did as a little girl with all the anticipation and lack of stress, as that is the way is SHOULD BE!  Sometimes I catch myself thinking that December 26th is my favorite day of the year, but then the reality of what this day really means to me and should mean to me sinks in.  I think maybe it's just that we are mom's and that is our job, to take care of everything, so stress has to happen sometimes.

So here's to all of you have a stress free, beautiful, joy filled, peaceful, and safe holiday!  And as I leave today I want to share a few "funnies" I have noted about myself this week, maybe some of you will relate:

  • There is always one more trip to the store needed for something "forgot", no matter how many times you've been.  That is until the tell you they are closed.
  • I can not bake to save my life..I am a decent cook, but baking is not my cup of tea.  The caramels turned out like rocks, the "practice" batch of rolls were ok "not as good as your mom's" as DH put it, I can't seem to ever bake cakes that don't torch on the edges and are gooey in the middle, and who knew that peppermint extract should not be used in equal portions as vanilla for frosting?? (this one is probably obvious as my mom thought it was hilarious)  I suspect some of my neighbors have this baking trouble too as I went to 4 stores trying to find Rhodes Rolls... where is grandma when I need her?

  • Don't clean until you are done cooking... really you just have to do it again.

  • Christmas is not complete without last minute changes (aka big projects)

  • The kids are just going to mess up your house in 10 minutes anyway

  • And most important, I don't take nearly enough pictures anymore!  I realized this as I was completing one of the above said "last minute projects." BTW, I pulled off BOTH albums for my kids. Yes, they are small but I managed to complete 25 pages in one month, I guess slowed sales were good for something! GO ME!  Merry Christmas Everyone!

Take A Break & Scrap!

Hello, EVERYONE!  Happy Holidays...Amanda here with my FIRST DT post.  Hope this post finds you all cozy and nestled in a warm spot in your homes.  Very cold here in middle TN where Kristina and I are from!

I thought a few easy layouts might help to calm your busy shopping days down!  I know for me at the end of a busy day, I love sitting down surfing the net for ideas!  So here you go:

Happy HolidaysHappy Holidays...super simple layout with a handcut gingerbread house.  I used embroidery floss on the back side for the window grids. PP: Paper Salon, Imaginisce, Basic Grey; Cardstock: Bazzill; Rubons: Jenni Bowlin Studios, Basic Grey; Letter stickers: Scenic Route; Ribbon: KI Memories; other: rhinestone, glass & fine glitters, chipboard star.

I cut out the door and put a family photo!  Super quick to create.

Merry Christmas Merry Christmas...PP:  3 Bugs In a Rug, Basic Grey; Label Spots:  Creative Cafe; other: vintage buttons.  I placed the photo with a boarder of paper strips; also, the label punchouts are rounded with corner rounder.

Forever

Forever...Do you ever get that "duh" feeling?  Well I did here!  I had gotten these Pearl Circular Stones from Kaiser Craft well I didn't realize until I was putting them down that they are individuals!  I so had the idea for a cardstock circle w/ them on there and I guess it is wasteful, but I did it anyways!  PP:  Basic Grey, American Crafts; Cardstock: Bazzill; Chipboard letters: Doodlebug; Label & Journaling Spot: Jenni Bowlin.

Make sure and check the two posts below.  One Minute Monday for a great decorating tip on homemade ornaments by Katie and Jill posted a great couple of updates from the store and a prize...a really great prize!

From my family to yours...Happy Holidays & Warm Wishes!
